Hurrah for the flag of the free!

In addition to random projects around the house we have found time this Memorial Day weekend to have a little outdoor fun. We went out to Crowders Mountain with our neighbors Paul, Traci, their cutie Greta and their dog Max yesterday for a hike at their suggestion. The original plan also included camping however, due to our last minute ideas (it is Memorial Day weekend after all) we were kind of out of luck for any drive up camp sites (ideal for two families with little kids) and our only other option was to camp at Crowders Mountain State Park at a campsite located just beyond a one mile hike from the parking lot (not as ideal for two families with little kids!) But in our pre-weekend on-line research, guided by our excitement at the idea of being out in the wilderness and our determination to find a campsite, we stumbled across the McDowell Nature Preserve which is only about 25 minutes outside of Charlotte. We stopped here as well yesterday to check it out for future hiking/camping excursions and man, it is awesome. And shame on us (and you, if you're living in Charlotte!) for not realizing such a great place so close to home. Great hikes, right on Lake Wylie, camping close to your car in case your little one can't handle the camping experience and plenty of other things to do. What we saw was great and spending more time there is definitely on our list of things to do in the coming weeks.

Little Greta just zonked out on our way down the mountain. Her little head flopped over to the side, face buried, fast asleep. How is it possible for babies to get in the most awkward positions and still get some solid sleep?
